Third charity golf day planned in memory of Armagh’s ‘Legend’ Harry McGeough

Last year's event was a roaring success with over 70 golfers taking part and an amazing total of £4995 raised in aid of Chest, Heart & Stroke NI.

‘Harry’s Day’ – a fundraiser in memory of Armagh man Harry ‘The Legend’ McGeough – is set to return this September for what will be the third annual golf day.

The event has been organised ever since Harry passed away in 2020 and this year it will be teeing off on Friday, September 1 at the County Armagh Golf Club – with proceeds in aid of Marie Curie.

Last year’s event, which took place on September 23, was a roaring success with over 70 golfers taking part and an amazing total of £4995 raised in aid of Chest, Heart & Stroke NI.

Harry (75), who was affectionately referred to as ‘The Legend’, was a well-known Armagh man who was involved in a number of local sporting clubs and who also sang at weddings and bars.

Harry had been battling cancer for seven years prior to his passing, and in recognition of the care he received at Craigavon Area Hospital, and in memory of his life, Harry’s wife Brenda set up ‘Harry’s Day’, which is now approaching its third year.

The inaugural fundraising day to remember Harry took place in September 2021, a year after he sadly passed away on September 15, two days after contracting Covid-19.

Speaking on last year’s event, Brenda told Armagh I that everybody enjoyed themselves.

“Everybody enjoyed the craic. It was a great day,” she said.

“There was one person that actually came over from America. He was one of Harry’s best friends and he came all the way from Florida just to play a round of golf.”

The success of last year’s event was a testament to just how well thought of Harry was in the community, and it is hoped that the event can be even bigger and better this year.

Said Brenda: “Harry was well known throughout Armagh. He played golf, he played hurling, he played football. There weren’t too many sports he didn’t play!”

Despite having only announced this year’s event at the weekend, Brenda has already secured 30 golfers and two sponsorships for the day.

She is appealing for more golfers, sponsors and “just anybody who would like to donate”.

Anyone interested in playing in the event, sponsoring a hole, or donating in any way to the cause is asked to contact Brenda at 075 2563 9263 or Kevin at 075 6186 6935.
