A Benburb teenager has appeared in court charged with causing the deaths of three people by dangerous driving last November.

Patrick Grimley, and his wife Ciera, lost their lives as a result of the collision, which happened on the Gosford Road in Markethill in the early hours of Saturday, November 4. Their friend Ciara McElvanna also died. They had been returning from a surprise 40th birthday party in Dundalk for Patrick.

Four others were seriously injured.

Family members of those who lost their lives in the fatal collision were present in the public gallery at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning.

They watched on as Josh McGleenan, from Ashveagh in Benburb, made his first appearance in the dock.

The 19-year-old also faces four charges of causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving; as well as one count of excess speed; using a mobile phone whilst driving; and being driver unable to properly control his vehicle.

During the brief hearing, McGleenan confirmed his date of birth for the court, while a detective constable confirmed that she could connect him to the ten charges.

Bail of £500 was agreed with the condition that the defendant does not travel in any vehicle except to go to and from work at times agreed by the police.

McGleenan will next appear in court in Newry on September 18.
