Specialist fire crew tasked to underground fire in Armagh

A specialist rescue team were tasked to the scene of an underground fire in Armagh last night.

The team, along with four fire crews from Armagh and Dungannon, were called to a fire outside the courthouse on the Mall at 9.55pm.

The fire broke out in a service ducting under the road accessed by a manhole.

Firefighters using specialised rope rescue techniques  extinguished the blaze with CAF foam before carrying out a thorough inspection.

Engineering works had been ongoing at the time of the incident and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire, which was dealt with shortly after midnight, is being treated as accidental.

Phone lines have been affected with many people across Armagh city currently without.

There is no estimated time for when services will return.
