Royal School Armagh bid fond farewell to Mr Thompson and his ‘no nonsense wisdom’

Addressing his colleagues for one final time on Monday June 30, Mr Thompson reflected on what kept him at Royal School Armagh all those years

After 40 years of “outstanding service” the Royal School Armagh (RSA) have bid a very fond farewell to a teacher whose wisdom has made “immeasurable” impact.

Mr Stevie Thompson – who joined the Royal School Armagh in 1985 – has officially announced his retirement and will not be returning to school life in the new academic year.

Affectionately, the Royal School Armagh shared the news of Mr Thompson’s retirement, adding that he was “known to different generations or in different contexts as CST, Mr Thompson, Stevie T or simply Stevie.”

The man of many names was also a man of many hats during his time at the grammar school, moving between departments over the years and even taking up a prominent role within the school’s boarding department.

A representative for the Royal School Armagh said: “Whether you knew him in the classroom, on duty in the boarding house, or leading a House competition, one thing never changed – his authority, integrity and deep commitment to RSA.

“Over the years, Stevie held an extraordinary range of roles. He began his journey as a Physics teacher and went on to become Head of Physics, then Head of Science, leading the department with clarity, knowledge and high standards. He served as Boarding Housemaster, shaping the lives of countless boarders with his steady presence and firm but fair approach.

“As Head of House (Beresford), he inspired friendly competition and house spirit. As Head of Prefects, he guided senior pupils to lead by example. More recently, he has been our Internal Examinations Coordinator – a role he approached with his usual precision and professionalism.

“Stevie was a teacher who commanded respect – old school in the very best sense. He brought calm authority, sharp insight and a deep belief in doing things the right way. Generations of families have had the privilege of being taught by him, and countless pupils have benefited from his no-nonsense wisdom.”

Addressing his colleagues for one final time on Monday, 30 June, Mr Thompson reflected on what had kept him at the Royal School Armagh all those years.

His reply, the school said, was simple: it was the people – from staff to pupils, past and present.

Wishing their esteemed colleague the very best for the future, the Royal School Armagh said: “RSA will not be the same without Stevie Thompson. His legacy is lasting, and his impact immeasurable.

“Thank you, Stevie – for everything. We wish you a long, happy and very well-earned retirement.”
