Reports of international healthcare staff considering leaving over concerns for safety

All nursing and healthcare staff deserve unconditional safety.

That’s the message being conveyed by Newry and Armagh MLA, Liz Kimmins, who was responding to reports that international healthcare workers were considering leaving Northern Ireland because they felt unsafe.

It comes just days after racist material was pasted inside Daisy Hill Hospital which was designed to intimidate.

Ms Kimmins, Chairperson of the Assembly Health Committee, said: “There is no place for racism, hatred, discrimination and intimidation anywhere in our society.

“Every nurse deserves unconditional safety. Critical care services will collapse without our international nursing and healthcare staff”.

The Sinn Féin elected representative concluded: “I appeal to everyone to reaffirm our commitment to making our ethnic minority community and indeed all our people feel welcome, safe and respected in our society and to recognise the contribution they make to our society.”
