‘Remarkable’ Armagh rugby coach whose knee injury couldn’t keep her from side-lines named as Local Club Hero

'Josephine goes above and beyond for City of Armagh Rugby Club, giving countless hours to coaching and supporting players across the club, particularly the girls’ U16s and U12s teams'

An Armagh woman whose commitment to her local rugby club has been described as “nothing short of remarkable” has been recognised as a Local Club Hero by Ulster Rugby.

In partnership with Bank of Ireland, Ulster Rugby annually provide volunteer recognition through their nationwide Local Club Hero competition.

Describing the competition, Ulster Rugby say: “…we know the game is about more than what happens on the pitch, it’s the incredible people behind the scenes who make rugby across the province special, and one of those people has now been chosen to be celebrated.”

Supporters were invited to nominate their Local Club Hero, as someone who goes “above and beyond for their club”.

The winners are then selected and alongside the recognition for all they do are each awarded two 2026 Game Passes for their incredible efforts.

On January 15, the moment everyone had been waiting for came to pass… when Josephine Strain was announced as this year’s winner!

Speaking of the reasons for Josephine’s selection, Ulster Rugby said: “… a truly deserving recipient whose dedication, selflessness and passion embody everything that grassroots rugby stands for.

“Josephine goes above and beyond for City of Armagh Rugby Club, giving countless hours to coaching and supporting players across the club, particularly the girls’ U16s and U12s teams.

“As both a mum and a coach, she empowers every player, builds confidence on and off the pitch, and ensures that enjoyment of rugby is just as important as results.

“Her commitment is nothing short of remarkable.”

The governing and representative body for rugby union explained that even after suffering a serious knee injury that required surgery, Josephine could not be separated from the side-lines – where she continued to show up for coaching, to run the line on match days and support her teams, “brace, crutches and all!”

They continued: “Where many would understandably step back, Josephine put her club and players first.

“Beyond coaching, she has taken on the role of club secretary, organised fundraisers, including the Pretty in Pink event, and is always at the heart of club life.

“From welcoming new players and parents, to making sure everyone feels involved, Josephine helps create a happy, inclusive club environment.

“And if there’s a tuck shop or tea stall, you can be sure her home baking won’t be far away!

“Josephine never asks for recognition, she simply wants a happy club and happy players.

“Her generosity of time, energy and care makes her not just a Club Hero, but a wonderful human being who has left a lasting impact on everyone around her.

“Congratulations, Josephine, and thank you for everything you do!”
