Speeding along the connective Mullinure Road, Armagh is unlikely to be addressed through the provision of a speed monitor – at least not with help from the Department for Infrastructure.

The road – accessed by either the Loughgall Road or Portadown Road in Armagh – has long been used as a short cut for bypassing city-centre traffic and leads on from the new substantial – and still incomplete – Deanery Demesne housing development to the busy St Luke’s Hospital site.

As such, it’s often a busy route in a densely populated area and speeding has become a real issue of concern.

Enquiring about the option to implement traffic calming measures in the area, SDLP MLA Justin McNulty asked the Infrastructure Minister if her Department had any plans to install a speed monitor at Mullinure Lane.

Minister Kimmins responded to say: “Road safety is a high priority for my Department and we are committed to working proactively to make our roads safer and to address the needs of all road users.”

However, the Minister explained: “Concerns regarding driver behaviour including speeding at this location should be directed to the PSNI, who are responsible for enforcement of the speed limit, using their non-emergency 101 number.”

In terms of providing a speed monitor, as suggested by the MLA, Minister Kimmins explained: “The provision of speed indicator devices (SIDs) are the responsibility of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) and you should liaise directly with them via the local Council.”
