Oíche Chultúir: Aonach Mhacha opens its doors for Culture Night in Armagh

Oíche Chultúir [Eng: Culture Night] is a national moment, celebrating all that makes up the richness and diversity of Culture in Ireland today, connecting people to cultural activities locally and nationally and aims to open up pathways to ongoing engagement.

Oíche Chultúir has evolved to become a collaborative experience with an emphasis on opening doors, welcoming people into new spaces and the discovery of different experiences meaning that Culture Night continues to belong to us all.

In Ard Mhacha we are blessed with an abundance and variety of culture that is the envy of many other towns and cities across Ireland. The City has an international reputation for its exceptional cultural heritage and arts offering and the new Aonach Mhacha Cultural Arts Centre in The Shambles is the latest expression of a thriving and vibrant cultural scene.

Culture Night invites everyone, everywhere, on one joyful night to discover and celebrate all that our culture is today.  Arts and cultural organisations and venues of all shapes and sizes, from independent studios and art-spaces to national cultural institutions, extend their opening hours to allow increased access for the public.

Aonach Mhacha is no exception and we are opening our doors to on the 17th of this month to allow visitors from across the island of Ireland to sample a little of what Ard Mhacha has to offer. We’ll be offering free visitor tours of our amazing new Irish language and cultural arts centre wherein people can visit our theatre, media suite and conference facilities with live music, cinema and cultural exhibitions. Take your time and relax in our Caifé Mhacha or browse our gift shop packed with gift ideas by local artists and craftspeople.

Learn the story of the Irish language in Ard Mhacha from its earliest Celtic origins right up to the C21st revival of Irish as a community language – a 2000 year unbroken continuum of spoken Irish in the Cathedral City.

Scéal Ard Mhacha is a new cultural heritage offering that has excited many in the cultural tourism sector. This multi-media offering will give visitors to Armagh City a flavour of the origin myths of the City and an illustration of most of the significant events that have shaped our City down the millenia.

Music will be plentiful and diverse on Culture Night in Aonach Mhacha and you’ll get a little bit of everything from folk to jazz and traditional to classical, there’ll be something to match everyone’s tastes.

We’ll also be going international with music and folk dancing from Bulgaria.

Culture Night happens because many people share a vision and enthusiasm for enjoying, celebrating and promoting creativity and culture. Its diversity is reflected in the scope and range of events and people who participate – and it aims to continue connecting with both engaged audiences as well as extending its reach to those who may not always have access.
