New ‘media boxes’ to be erected on roof of Athletic Grounds western terrace

Approval to be recommended for plan to install 'modified shipping containers' for media facility

A new media facility is being planned at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh.

Proposals had been submitted by the Trustees of the Armagh County Board back in July.

And after giving them due consideration, planners at Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council are to recommend the work can proceed.

The Athletic Grounds already has a very impressive press area and can screen matches live via its own TV channel – Armagh TV.

Now the intention is to add a new media facility, facing the existing clubhouse side.

It will take the form of four modified shipping containers to provide four individual ‘media boxes’.

These will be put in place on the roof of the western terrace.

Access will be provided via an external steel stairway and gantry.

The new facility could see an end to the temporary media facility harshly erected in the Cathedral Road end of the ground when it comes to the Ulster Championship in May/June.

The BBC Championship and RTE crews would now be able to avail of the new feature to one of Ulster’s most used GAA grounds.

Environmental health were consulted as part of the process and expressed “no objection”.

That is subject to the condition that “artificial lighting associated with the development should be optically controlled and directed in such a manner as to minimise light pollution from glare and spill”.

The opinion to approve will go the council’s November planning meeting and will be subject to being formally ratified at the full sitting later in the month.
