The 30-year-old had been in custody following his arrest last week

A co-accused charged with causing the death of a county Armagh teenager has been released from custody.

Damien Paul McCann, 30, of Monaghan Road, Armagh, was granted bail by a High Court judge.

He is charged with causing the death of Lesley-Ann McCarragher.

The 18-year-old was struck by a vehicle as she jogged along the Monaghan Road in April 2016.

Detectives have been investigating the alleged movements of two cars involved in the incident that day.

McCann was arrested last week after handing himself into police at Armagh courthouse, after an arrest warrant was issued against his name.

He denies driving the car which struck Ms McCarragher.

The ruling judge said it had been a devastating accident and that with his co-accused on bail “it’s inevitable that this driver should be given bail”.

“That’s no reflection on the liability of the drivers, or one of them, it’s simply a comment on how the courts are required to operate bail principles,” he added.

McCann must report to police twice a week and has been banned from having any contact with his co-accused.
