Man and woman dead after single vehicle collision at border close to Middletown

Two people have died following a single vehicle road traffic collision on the Monaghan/Armagh border near Middletown.

The car they were travelling in left the road and ended up in a bog at Killyneill Cross in Co Monaghan at around 6pm on Friday.

A man and a woman in their 70s were removed from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

A coroner attended at the scene and the bodies were taken to the mortuary at Monaghan Hospital.

Forensic investigators from the Garda Síochána will examine the scene this morning (Saturday).

The R213 road was closed on Friday night and diversions were in place.
