Locksmith who held key to our hearts: Armagh mourns loss of beloved Noel Dillon

He cared about his community and it was abundantly clear in everything he did

Armagh is mourning the loss of one of it’s most well-known, loved and respected businessmen.

Getting a key copied, made or having a lock changed are some of the most arduous tasks that locksmith, Noel Dillon made into a absolute pleasure.

No task was too big or small. He did it all with a smile and cheerful disposition. At all times he was happy to help.

More than that, Noel knew his customers. He often remembered conversations, asked about family members and took the time to ask about life… and football! He cared about his community and it was abundantly clear in everything he did.

If common ground wasn’t immediately clear, you could be sure Noel would find it.

His shop on Scotch Street has been a staple of the city highstreet for too many years to count. And, among his neighbouring retailers, he also made many a friend.

Following a fiercely fought battle with cancer, Noel sadly passed away on November 4 at his home in Hamiltonsbawn.

He was the dearly loved husband of Lynette, loving father of Cori, Oby, Casey and Charlie, who the local community are rallying to support in the heartbreaking days ahead.

Over the years Noel was also a incremental part of Markethill Swifts Football Club where his sons and three of his nephews have played and coached.

The club also credited Noel for over a decade of dedication. He himself had coached, was a regular match sponsor and was a huge fundraiser and supporter. It was rare that you would have entered Armagh Locksmiths and not found a Markethill Swifts fundraising sheet or raffle tickets up for grabs.

He loved the club and did all he could to ensure the youth and senior teams had access to every opportunity that presented itself. For that, they will be forever grateful.

Since news of his passing emerged, many hundreds have shared their fond memories of a man who made a lasting impression on their lives.

Echoing the sentiments aforemention, one person said: “Devastated to hear the news about Noel. He was a man I was lucky to count on as a friend and someone who would drop everything to help you out. Our thoughts are with the entire family.”

Another added: “Noel was one of the best neighbours on Scotch Street you could have. I’ll miss the craic, the banter and his big smile. Life is just so unfair! Thinking of you all in the difficult days ahead.”

Others have called him “one of the nicest guys ever”, a “truly lovely gentleman” and someone who you could always count on.

Those who are fortunate enough to have made memories with Noel will recall them with great fondness. Laughs were never in short supply.

According to a death notice, his Funeral service is due to be held in Richhill Elim Church on November 7 at 11am followed by a private cremation.

Family and friends welcome to call at the family home today and Friday from 6-9pm.

Family flowers only have been requested, with donations in lieu if desired for Bowel Cancer UK.

We wish to pass on our sincerest condolences to Noel’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. He will be deeply missed by all.
