Heartbreak as popular Armagh ‘gentleman’ passes away while on holiday in Lanzarote

"If I could embody even half the spirit and heart he did, I'd consider myself blessed. Rest in peace, Marty."

Marty Murray

Tributes have been paid to a popular Armagh man who passed away suddenly while on holiday in Lanzarote.

Martin Murray – or Marty as he was known to his friends – died suddenly last Thursday (November 2).

A funeral notice described Marty, formerly of Greenfield Drive, as the beloved partner of Sheila, dear father of Michelle and Justin, Sheila’s family, Jonny and Julie and their families, devoted grandfather of Keith and Jack, dear brother of Kevin, Eunan and the late Seamus.

Mark McSherry, who paid tribute to Marty’s life, said he “couldn’t let the weekend pass without mentioning that Mr Martin Murray sadly passed away the other day on the island of Lanzarote (his family are arranging to take him home).”

Said Mark: “He was a wonderful gentleman and a frequent visitor to the barber over the years, always smiling and loved the craic.

“I recall fondly when we were all celebrating the millennium, I ended up in PB’s in the Moy for the festivities at 12. He came over to say hello and remarked how well dressed I was. I, in return, told him that it was actually the likes of himself that still inspired me!

“He was always immaculate, even when working. Thoughts and prayers with all his family circle x rest easy Marty.”

Jonny Stinson also paid tribute to “a true champion in every sense”.

“A man who would go to the ends of the earth for you and had an unmatched sense of humour,” wrote Jonny.

“There was never a dull moment when Marty was near. He was a wonderful and caring partner to my mum for over 25 years. If I could embody even half the spirit and heart he did, I’d consider myself blessed. Rest in peace, Marty.”

Funeral details for Martin have not been released at this time.

House private and family flowers only. Donations in lieu if desired for The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust c/o K G Cheevers & Son, Funeral Directors, 28 Dobbin Street, Armagh, BT61 7QQ.
