Former TA Centre just off Armagh’s Mall set to be demolished

The former TA Centre at the Mall in Armagh looks set to be demolished.

The two-storey building – as well as the adjacent Army Cadet Force base – will be removed too.

In their place would be built a single-storey replacement for use by the Army Cadet Force and local community groups.

Proposals have been drawn up and lodged with Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for consideration.

The application is being made by the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association Northern Ireland.

The TA Centre and ACF properties sit back from the Mall.

The precise address for the development is given in the submission as being on “lands with access from The Mall East, Armagh between Hartford Cottage, 8 The Mall East and 1 Hartford Place and approximately 55m northeast of 1-4 Hartford Place, The Mall East, Armagh, approximately 50m west of 3 Grantham Gardens, Armagh and SE of St. Mark’s Church ( C
of I) Church Hall”.

The new building would include two offices, two lecture rooms, a training hall with connected servery and a multi-purpose room. There would also be changing rooms and toilets too, as well as a waiting area, trophies display area and storage provision.

The plans also detail parking, with an increase of spaces available on site from six to 21, with four disabled bays.

A new landscaped area – including a lawn and tree-planting – would also be created, while existing workshops would be retained.

It was in July 2013 that the planned closure of the Territorial Army base in Armagh was announced.

The TA, now styled as the Army Reserve, currently has its main Co Armagh operations based at Charles Street in Portadown.

The Army Cadet Force, a national youth organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and British Army, will benefit from the new development, while the application indicates it will also be for use by “community groups” too.

The proposals will now be advertised shortly.
