The company, which was established 110 years ago, will be able to increase output and improve efficiency as a result of plans to add close to 20,000 sq ft to existing floorspace

Armagh-based Farmlay Eggs is planning a major multi-million pound extension to its city production facility.

And while the development, at Hamiltonsbawn Road, is not expected at this stage to see an increase to staffing numbers, it will allow for increased output.

Proposals have been drawn up for a development – which would represent an increase of floorspace of around 20,000 sq ft –  in the name of R Thompson and Sons (Armagh) Ltd.

Farmlay Eggs is the trading name of the company, which was established 110 years ago, and is currently based at the Hamiltonsbawn Road Industrial Estate.

The application has been made to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for a two-storey development.

The works will involve an “extension and alterations” to the existing egg processing factory. This will provide additional factory floor area to allow for increased automation, storage space, loading bays and office accommodation.

Associated siteworks are also incorporated into the development.

The number of parking spaces will also increase, from the existing 60 to 84.

The company is involved in egg processing and packaging and, according to the application form, the number of employees on site daily would not change.

There would, however, be a slight increase, from 10 to 12, in the number of articulated lorries.

According to a transport assessment form: “The purpose of this proposed extension is to provide additional floorspace for increased storage and to allow new machines and equipment to be used to increase the efficiency of
existing operations.

“There will only be a small increase in vehicle numbers (2 HGVs) as a result of this development.”

All told, the extension, if approved, would see a new-look facility boasting over 78,000 sq ft in floorspace with increased output.

The application will now be advertised shortly.
