Families evacuated as ‘viable device’ is made safe

A security alert in county Armagh has ended this evening (Friday).

Police and Army Technical Officers spent most of the evening at the scene of a suspect device near Killylea.

A short stretch of the Elm Park Road was cordoned off while a police helicopter was also dispatched to the scene.

It is understood that the suspicious object was in fact a viable device. It has now been made safe.

Residents in nearby homes had been urged to stay to the rear of their properties but some families were later evacuated as the operation continued into the evening.

Earlier a police spokesperson said: “Police are examining a suspicious object on Elm Park Road in Killylea in County Armagh. No homes have been evacuated however the road has been closed as a precaution.”
