Eye-witness describes ‘carnage’ as flames rip through well-known Armagh bar

Northern bar fire Armagh

A well-known Armagh bar has been destroyed as flames rip through a building the city.

Fire crews are currently tackling the blaze at the Northern Bar on Railway Street, as eye-witnesses describe seeing flames from floor to ceiling.

Windows have been blown from the corner property as emergency services cordon off the area around the junction of Railway Street and Lonsdale Road.

Smoke can be seen billowing from the two-storey building as fire personnel in cherry pickers attempt to douse the flames, which are clearly visible on the second floor.

One eye-witness, speaking to Armagh I, described the scene as “carnage”.

“The whole building is destroyed – you can hear the roar of the flames from across the road. It’s so bad.

“I don’t want to imagine the damage this fire has caused but it’s not good at all. I just hope everyone is okay.”

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area completely as firefighters continue to tackle the blaze.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Due to a fire at a building, Railway Street and Lonsdale Road in Armagh are closed. Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to seek alternative routes.”
