A poignant candlelight vigil will take place in Armagh next to remember the 28 women who have been murdered in Northern Ireland since 2020.
The gathering, organised for 6pm on Monday, July 28 at Market Square in the city centre, follows the devastating triple murder of a mother and her two teenage children in Maguiresbridge, County Fermanagh on Wednesday morning.
Police have confirmed the victims as 45-year-old Vanessa Whyte, a veterinary surgeon and her children, Sara (13) and James (14).
A man – who is a member of the same household – is being treated for serious gunshot injuries at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
The incident is being treated as a triple murder – attempted suicide.
Tributes and condolences have poured in from schools and clubs across Fermanagh and Northern Ireland as a whole.
The family were active and beloved members of the community, particularly in sporting circles, and their loss will leave a lasting impact for the months and years to come.
The Armagh vigil organisers – End VAWG Armagh – say the event is not only a moment of remembrance but a call to action – “enough is enough”.
Attendees will stand in solidarity and demand urgent policy and community responses that ensure no more lives are stolen.
Meanwhile, a vigil will be held in Maguiresbridge Primary School, where James and Sara previously attended, on Friday evening at 7pm.
