Elderly residents in Newry and Armagh are being urged to apply for the Winter Fuel Payment in advance of the colder weather.
Newry and Armagh Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan issued a reminder to ensure those who are entitled do not miss out.
He said: “The scheme is designed to assist pensioners to meet the cost of heating their homes during the colder winter period.
“It can be a massive help to those who cannot afford the extra cost of energy needed in their homes during the winter months, to provide heat and prepare food.
“Winter Fuel Payment is not means tested and you can get it if you have reached the qualifying age if you were born before 5 May 1953, regardless of whether you are claiming a benefit or working.”
The local MLA says applications can be made via phone 0345 915 15 15 or online at https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/winter-fuel-payment .
He has urged anyone with any queries to get in touch with his constituency office on 028 3751 1797.
