Elderly man (85) crashes through paint shop in Armagh city centre

Clarke's Paint Shop crash

An elderly man crashed through an Armagh city centre paint shop on Sunday afternoon.

Shocked by-standers could only watch on as the car ploughed through the front facade, taking the shutters, door and glass window of Clarke’s Decorate with it.

Emergency services were called to Scotch Street premises shortly after 4.20pm.

A spokesperson for NI Fire and Rescue Service nobody suffered any serious injuries.

He said: “Two appliances and one Station Commander attended the scene where an 85-year-old gentleman crashed through the front window of a paint store on Scotch Street.

“Thankfully he did not suffer any serious injuries but understandably he was left very shaken.

“Once on scene, officers cut through the shutters of the store front and managed, with some difficulty, to get this man out of his car.”

An eye-witness, speaking to Armagh I, said: “It was absolutely shocking; the poor wee man must be in an awful state.

“From what we could see, the shop wasn’t in a good way but luckily that’s all we’re talking about because there were people walking along both sides of the street.

“This really could have been an altogether different story.”
