Council investigation over alleged unauthorised opening of venue in Armagh city centre

Thomas Street, Armagh

An investigation has been launched following the alleged unauthorised opening of premises in Armagh city centre over the weekend, Council has confirmed.

Concerns were raised over the launch of a new shop/venue on Thomas Street on Saturday morning.

Armagh I understands the shop – a social venue – was celebrating its opening day, which went on late into the evening.

Members of the public raised a number of concerns on social media; some contacted Armagh I to question whether permission had been granted for licensed premises.

As a result, an internal enforcement meeting was held with council officials on Monday morning, and it is understood the venue will remain closed until certain criteria is met, including licensing and – in particular – planning requirements.

A spokesperson for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council told Armagh I: “We are aware of an alleged unauthorised use of a premises in Armagh and the matter is currently under investigation.

“We can confirm Council officers will be engaging with the operator of the premises to ensure that, if the use is unauthorised, it ceases until all necessary statutory approvals are obtained.”
