Co Armagh man appears in court on Isle of Man charged with rape

Courts

A Co Armagh man has appeared in court on the Isle of Man charged with rape.

Robert John (RJ) Woolsey, of Aghory Road, outside Richhill, has been remanded into custody following a short hearing in the island’s capital, Douglas, on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old, who was on the island for the Isle of Man TT event, has been charged with one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault.

Manx Radio reported that the three offences allegedly took place in a portable toilet, on Walpole Avenue in Douglas, on Friday, May 26.

A cash surety of £30,000 was offered up to the court to allow for Woolsey’s release from custody, however, bail was refused on the grounds that Northern Ireland is outside the jurisdiction and any conditions could not be enforced.

Committal proceedings will take place on July 25.

Woolsey was remanded back into custody at the Isle of Man Prison until his next appearance on June 13.
