Clady preschool ‘deeply disappointed’ after vandals damage outdoor play area

A Clady preschool has spoken of its “extreme disappointment” after vandals targeted its outdoor play area, damaging equipment including a relatively new play frame.

Clady Tiny Tots, which provides preschool care in the village, said the incident has not only harmed a vital learning space for local children but has also placed added strain on the playgroup at a time of already significant financial pressure.

In a statement, the setting said the damaged items were “not just ‘extras,’ but a vital part of our children’s daily learning, development, and wellbeing”.

“This damage comes at a time when financial pressures are already high,” the group continued. “Repairing or replacing equipment places an additional burden on our playgroup, which ultimately impacts what we can offer the children in our care.”

Appealing for an end to the behaviour, Clady Tiny Tots said its facilities exist solely for the benefit of local children.

“We ask, respectfully but firmly, that this behaviour stops. Our setting is here for the benefit of current and future preschool children and deserves to be treated with care,” the statement added.

The playgroup has warned that if incidents persist, it will be forced to escalate its response.

“If this behaviour continues, we will have no choice but to take further action, including obtaining and sharing CCTV footage.

“We appreciate the support of our community in helping us protect this important space for our children.”

The vandalism has been condemned by local Sinn Féin representatives.

Cusher Sinn Féin councillor Bróna Haughey said the attack had caused deep upset among families and staff.

“This is not just vandalism, it’s damage to a place where our children learn, play, and feel safe,” she said.

“Seeing this space deliberately damaged, including new play equipment, is deeply upsetting for families, staff, and the wider community.

“At a time when every penny counts, this behaviour places a real burden on a service that exists for children. It takes resources away from their education, care and development.

“We have engaged with statutory agencies to find those responsible.

“I urge anyone with information to come forward. Our children deserve better.”

Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan also condemned the incident, describing it as “disgraceful”.

“Damaging a preschool isn’t harmless, it directly impacts children and families, reducing opportunities and adding pressure,” he said.

“There is no justification. It must stop, and those responsible must be held to account.

“Communities deserve safe spaces for their children, and we will work with all agencies to end this behaviour.”
