Bins strike: Council deliver decision on worker’s appeal against dismissal

Unite strike - empty picket line at Palace Demesne gates

For more than seven weeks a picket line has formed at the gates of the Palace Demesne in Armagh as Unite members strike over the Council’s dismissal of an employee.

On Thursday morning there was no sign of life, a day after Council delivered its decision on the worker’s appeal against his dismissal.

Details of the alleged misconduct and subsequent appeals outcome have not been made public.

Regardless, the decision will now prompt a response from the union on its ongoing industrial action.

Sinn Féin councillor, Sarah Duffy, commented: “We acknowledge the outcome of the appeals process but are unable to comment further due to confidentiality.

“Relations now need to be rebuilt and we have asked council management to urgently meet Unite members.

“We encourage council management and Unite to agree a way forward that will bring this strike to an end.

“We will work with all to improve industrial relations going forward.

“We want to thank the public for their continued patience and pay tribute to refuge staff, staff in amenity sites and council officers who have went above and beyond during this time.”

The strike has been ongoing since July 17 and is set to continue until September 13, however, it is now unlikely that it will continue into next week.

Armagh I has approached Council and Unite for comment.
