Armagh is set to welcome one of the strongest sporting events on the calendar as it hosts the British & Irish Outdoor Tug of War Championships for the first time ever later this month.
The prestigious competition will be hosted by Richhill Tug of War Club, in partnership with the Northern Ireland Tug of War Association, and marks a momentous occasion for the local club as it celebrates 50 years “on the pull”.
Richhill has long been a powerhouse of the sport. Since its founding in 1975, the club has earned recognition and medals on both the World and European stages, in indoor and outdoor disciplines, as well as at UK and British & Irish championships.
Club members have trained across various sites in the area over the decades — including at times within Armagh’s Palace Grounds, a symbolic connection as the official hotel for the 2025 event will sit adjacent to the same grounds.
Bringing the championships to Armagh is not only a historic first for the city, but also a proud milestone for Richhill Tug of War Club in their half a century of pulling.
A spokesperson for the club said: “As we mark our 50th anniversary, we’re honoured to bring the British & Irish Championships to Armagh for the very first time.
“It’s a fitting way to celebrate our legacy and the strength of the sport in this region. We look forward to welcoming teams and spectators from across the UK and Ireland for what promises to be an unforgettable event.”
The event takes place on the grounds of St Luke’s in Armagh on Friday, July 25 and Saturday July 26. The opening ceremony begins at 9.30am on the Friday with competition running until 5pm. Saturday also has a 9.30am start.
The event is an open event and free to attend. Members of the public are encouraged to come down and show their support for the competitors.
