Armagh Pikekickers Triathlon Club celebrating ten years of fitness and friendship

'Whether you're a novice looking to 'tri' out the sport or a seasoned athlete seeking a new community, Armagh Pikekickers welcome all'

Armagh Pikekickers Triathlon Club has turned 10 years old this year, celebrating a decade of fitness, friendship and athletic achievements.

With a diverse band of members ranging from beginners to seasoned triathletes, the club has been a beacon for fitness enthusiasts in the greater Armagh area since it was established in 2014.

The club also celebrates a high pedigree of athletic achievement, having recently sent nine of their own athletes to compete in the Dublin Marathon last month.

On Sunday, November 10, club member Daithi Conlon took on the Athens Marathon, the latest in a long line of Pikekickers to compete abroad.

The club are also taking the tenth anniversary period as a time to recruit and build up the membership.

The anniversary celebrations culminated with the highly successful Tri the Orchard Triathlon event, a sprint distance triathlon sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland.

It took place at Loughgall Country Park on Saturday, June 29, providing a challenge to athletes of all levels.

The sprint distance triathlon, a popular category in the triathlon world, features a 750m swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run.

The distances are designed to be accessible to a wide range of participants, making it an ideal opportunity for those new to the sport to take their first plunge into the world of triathlons.

Club Chairperson, Declan Gordon, commended the race organising committee for Tri the Orchard, and noted the broader impact of the club on community life.

He said: “As we celebrate a decade of our club’s existence, it’s not just about the Tri the Orchard race – it’s about the incredible journey and camaraderie that has defined us. Our club has evolved into a close-knit community that extends beyond the finish lines. We are not just athletes, rather we are a family that supports, inspires and celebrates each other’s triumphs.

“The Armagh Pikekickers have seen steady growth over the past 10 years, with membership numbers consistent each year, united by a shared passion for triathlon and a commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.”

Declan says the club is set apart by its family ethos.

He continued: “Members not only compete together but also travel across Ireland and Europe, creating lasting memories and friendships. The club’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in its diverse membership, with female membership increasing year on year, breaking any stereotype of triathlons being male-dominated events.

“But it’s not just about racing. It’s about the shared laughs and the support we provide one another – that’s what makes us who we are. Though the occasional friendly competition doesn’t go amiss!”

Committee member, Lorraine O’Neill, added: “The club’s demographic is a reflection of its commitment to accessibility, with members spanning from teenagers to retired individuals. First-timers find encouragement and support, whilst seasoned athletes find new challenges.

“So whether you’re a novice looking to ‘tri’ out the sport or a seasoned athlete seeking a new community, Armagh Pikekickers welcome all. Prospective members can get in touch through email, Facebook, or Instagram to learn more about joining this vibrant and thriving club.”
