Armagh Omniplex closure ‘a blow for city centre’ but work focused on finding positive replacement

An emphasis will be placed on finding a “positive replacement” following the news Omniplex Armagh will not be renewing the lease of their Market Street premises beyond February 2026.

On Monda night, Armagh I reported that the end credits for cinema in Armagh city centre are set to roll 30 years on from the opening of The City Film House at the site in 1995.

Sinn Féin Councillor Sarah Duffy said the closure will be a blow for the wider community.

“This will be disappointing news for many, especially families and young people who’ve enjoyed the cinema over the years,” she said.

“My thoughts are with the staff affected at this difficult time.”

Councillor Duffy confirmed that Armagh DEA councillors met with council officials to begin looking at solutions and the next steps.

“Our focus is on finding a positive replacement for the site – something that brings social and economic value to the city centre.

“Sinn Féin will continue working to support local communities and ensure Armagh city centre remains a vibrant and welcoming place.”

Art O’Hagan, Chairman of City Centre Management (CCM), said: “We in CCM will closely monitor all retail commercial premises in our city centre and of course are fully aware of the changes in consumers patterns.

“While we are saddened to hear of the potential closure of the cinema we know Netflix, Prime and Youtube are offering greater variety to the consumer in the privacy of their own home.

“On a positive note we are also delighted to see the very popular ‘Measured’ open in the Rainbow Building and hope to announce soon a new business coming into Embers restaurant.

“The high street in all towns across the province has changed unfortunately due to online shopping. This may be an easier form of shopping due to consumers work commitments but this is to the detriment of our High Street which is the heart of our communities.”
