Armagh Observatory and Planetarium has announced that it is set to live screen the famous Christmas Lectures from the Royal Institution.

The screenings will take place in the Copernicus Hall on 13th December and in the Kepler Room on 15th December.

Viewed as the world’s foremost science lectures for young people, the Christmas Lectures have been inspiring children and adults alike since 1825. The Royal Institution’s 2022 Lectures will be delivered by world-renowned forensic investigator, Dame Sue Black, who will reveal the secrets of forensic science.

During the 2.5-hour livestream, Sue will provide an unprecedented insight into how she deciphers secret messages hidden within the body, as she strives to name the unknown, reuniting dead and living bodies with their identity.

She will use notable cases from her remarkable career to explore the scope and limitations of forensic science, revealing how extraordinary clues in our bones can reveal everything from our age, and medical history, to our diets and ancestry; as well as how the trend for body modifications – from split tongues to Teflon horns – has become an unexpected forensic tool.

Heather Alexander, Senior Education Officer at Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, says, “We look forward to welcoming visitors to our Christmas Lectures Live Stream with The Royal Institution event here in the Planetarium.

“Armagh Planetarium is the longest running planetarium in the British Isles and is fully equipped with state-of-the art digital technology, which allows us to deliver a variety of presenter-led shows on site.

“As Northern Ireland’s public face of space and astronomy, the Planetarium is a fitting venue for this event, which we hope will help to inspire our STEM leaders of the future. “

The 2022 Christmas Lectures will be broadcast on BBC Four and iPlayer between Christmas and New Year.

The Christmas Lecture Live Stream with The Royal Institution event is suitable for adults and children aged over 11.
