An Armagh man – with a “terrible” record – who stole five KitKat Chunky bars from a shop in the city has been spared prison.
Glenn John Carroll, of Navan Cottages, appeared before Armagh Magistratesʼ Court – sitting in Newry – charged with two counts of theft.
On Tuesday, March 3, the 40-year-old walked into Mullanʼs Spar on the Killylea Road in Armagh at 10.10am and lifted five KitKat Chunky bars to the value of £7 and leaves without paying.
Two days later, police received a report of a theft from B&M Bargains in Armagh.
It was reported that at approximately 3.30pm Carroll enters the store and steals a loaf of bread, two litres of milk, and some pet toys.
Carroll was confronted by staff at the front door, however, he left the store without making any attempt to pay for the goods. Carroll returned a few moments later and placed the milk back in the fridge.
He was arrested on April 21 and made full admissions.
His defence barrister said Carroll has “a terrible record but has been keeping out of trouble”.
He added: “He tells me he’s trying to keep on the straight and narrow. Heʼs living with his father. He has a long-standing issue of drugs misuse and addiction and is currently on a methadone programme.”
The lawyer said Caroll “had been drinking heavily” at the time of these thefts.
District Judge Anne Marshall remarked: “You’ve a bad record, but that seems to have tailed off quite recently. These are low amounts, but obviously you still can’t go into shops and take things.
“I know you did put the milk back and you made full admissions, so I’ll give you one month in custody and I’ll suspend that for one year.”
