Armagh businessman accused of child sex offences referred to Crown Court

Brian McCauley

An Armagh businessman accused of carrying out a sex act in the presence of a child is to appear in the Crown Court next month.

Brian McCauley, of Jubilee Park, also faces a charge of sexual communication with a child.

The 48-year-old appeared before Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for the purposes of a preliminary enquiry (PE) – the legal process during which a case is referred to the higher court.

During the brief hearing a prosecuting lawyer submitted there was a prima facie case against the defendant.

McCauley confirmed his name and date of birth and that he did not object to the holding of a PE.

While none of the facts of the case were outlined, the court heard the alleged offences occurred on March 29, 2024.

The prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer – Deputy District Judge Rosie Watters agreed.

McCauley was released on his own bail of £500 to re-appear at Newry Crown Court on March 11 for arraignment.
