Local hopes in this year’s National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards will be carried on the shoulders of Leeanne Cornett, who works with people with disabilities in the Southern Trust, after she was named as a finalist.

With 25 years of experience in caring roles, Leeanne is currently Assistant Day Care Manager within Armagh and Dungannon disability day care services.

The National Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards celebrate excellence in the support for people with learning disabilities and pay tribute to those who excel in providing quality care.

Leeanne has been shortlisted in the ‘Frontline Leader’ category.

Mairead Murphy, Day Care Manager who nominated Leeanne says: “Leeanne is such a positive role model, always striving to improve the lives of people with a learning disability.

“She acts with the greatest professionalism and demonstrates the highest standards, leading her team to deliver the best possible care for service users and their carers.

“Despite the huge challenges presented by Covid-19 on service users, carers and staff, Leeanne and her team have continually gone above and beyond.

“Throughout lockdown she developed new online and socially distanced activities for service users and
once we were able to reopen, Leeanne worked with community services, transport and carers, co-ordinating her team to allow a safe return. She has worked diligently to manage the risks, giving service users much needed structure again

“With great compassion and attention to detail, Leeanne has tried to make this whole experience as easy as possible for our service users.

“She has worked closely with Speech and Language Therapy colleagues and other staff, using visual signs and social stories to explain all the changes and new concepts that the pandemic has brought.”

Congratulations to Leeanne and best of luck from all of your colleagues, service users and their carers!

The winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 19.
