Anger at latest incident of fuel dumping

The latest incident of toxic waste dumping in South Armagh has been branded “an affront to the local community”.

Cubes of sludge were abandoned at a roadside at Tullydonnell.

And it’s the second incident in that area since the New Year.

Slieve Gullion Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Larkin has condemned the latest incident.

He said: “The dumped cubes are leaking their poison into the South Armagh countryside. Those involved in these activities must know the damage their actions are doing to the environment and to the reputation of this area.

“I would request that they reflect on this and cease their trade immediately. Illicit profits cannot be allowed to supercede the rights of a proud hard working community.”

Local MLA Megan Fearon reiterated her colleague’s message and called for a new approach to the problem of laundered diesel.
“More needs to be done to combat this scourge and a more imaginative position in relation to this has to be pursued,” she said. “Using mere markers in the fuel is not working. There must be another way forward to end what amounts to the slow poisoning of this beautiful area.”
