DINNER DANCE

Over 150 members and supporters descended upon the clubrooms on Friday night for the 2015 Dinner Dance. One of the largest crowds in recent years were treated to a delicious meal from our very own Collette Byrne who has recently launched her new catering business. Next there were performances from our Ulster Champion Moya Strain & our Instrumental Group who picked up the Armagh crown. Moya, along with Miceal Muckian on box, Tomas Muckian on guitar, Niamh & Fionn Downey on whistle & bodhrán and the youngest member, Tomás Ó Ceallaigh on fiddle were commended for their wonderful achievements over the previous twelve months and the joy that they have brought to our club and community. Chairman Ciaran Ferris then acknowledged both acts with a presentation.

There was success on the camogie field in 2015 with the U16 team winning their league undefeated and championship. Laura Leonard collected the trophies on behalf of herself and co-captain Briege McParland, before all of the girls picked up their winners medals. Janine McKinley and Paula McParland were deserved winners of the joint Player-of-the-Year award. The Senior Player of the Year was a very popular choice with everyone in attendance, as Charlie presented the Stephen O’Hare Perpetual Cup to Lisa Grant.

Unfortunately a prior engagement meant that one of our guests of honour; All-Star Mairead Tennyson, was unable to attend the presentations. Senior Ladies Player of the Year was another popular choice with star goalkeeper Ellen McVerry being awarded the Doreen Tennyson Memorial Trophy for her exploits in a pulsating campaign for the ladies in their first year since their reformation. Caroline O’Hare, who unfortunately was in England on the night was recognised for her wonderful achievement of being named Division II County Player of the Year. The girls had a wonderful campaign, only losing out in a replay in the County Final and the team recognised the effort put in by Colm, Kieran and Adel with a presentation.

The presentations concluded with Men’s Football. Niall Strain & Eamonn O’Coinn, two exciting prospects within our club were named joint Player of the Year. Gerry McParland, along with chairman Ciaran Ferris then presented Ciaran Grant with Senior Footballer of the Year. Ciaran was outstanding all over the pitch last season and finished as top scorer. MC Benny Tierney reminisced about his last gasp winner from 55 yards in the final game of the year. Unfortunately Ciaran picked up a nasty injury in a challenge game on Sunday morning, and everyone wishes him a speedy recovery.

Hall of Fame was next on the agenda, with Ciaran Ferris making the presentation on behalf of the McCreesh family. Kevin Murphy was duly recognised for his fifty-plus years of service to GAA in Mullaghbawn, in playing and non-playing roles. Kevin has dedicated himself to improving our club and continues to be an asset to the entire community. It was great to see our Club President John Crawley in attendance to make the presentation of the Pat Kelly/ Club Person of the Year award, along with Karen Daly. Maura Quinn, who has worked tirelessly over the years to improve the financial standing of our club, was fittingly recognised for her dedication and hard work. Maura was described as the glue that continues to keeps our club together and an irreplaceable asset.

The presentations concluded with a word of thanks to our sponsors, secretary and everyone who supported the club’s fundraising events since last year, before Keep er’ Country kicked off the entertainment. Thanks to the boys for the wonderful music. Benny Tierney was on top form as usual and continues to set our Dinner Dance apart from the rest with his hilarious, unique style as compere. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Finally thanks to everyone who dedicated time and effort into the organisation of the event, Shanroe Photography for capturing the night and indeed everyone who made the effort to attend the event.

St Michael’s GFC

Senior Team

The Senior Team have got their season underway with 2 challenge games in 6 days. Last Sunday they hosted Monaghan team, Killiney in Newtown. In very wet conditions St.Michaels grinded out a one point win. Then we hosted Ballymacnab on Friday night past again in very blustery conditions, and again winning by the slimmest of margins after a tight finish in which Neil O’Rourke was shown the dreaded black card for a mistimed tackle. At this stage of the year the result is not as important as getting the team to gel and establish a style of play, though it is nice to get that winning habit and hopefully this will continue into the start of the league.

Club Dinner Dance

The Club Dinner dance took place on Saturday Night in the Rural Community Hall. This was a fantastic night for the club, with everyone feeling right at home in the new building and a nice meal provided by McEntee caterers, what better way to celebrate our year. The Senior Player of The Year was well deserved by Aidan Quinn. Francis Hughes was recognized as Most Improved Player and Louise Lenagh was a unanimous choice for The Club Person of The Year. There are many people to Thank for the success of this event, the committee and volunteers who prepared the hall from early on saturday, those who done the bar, and those who cleaned on Sunday, this is all very much appreciated by the club. Also, sincere thanks to our sponsors Todays Local, Spar, Cosy, Sheer Elegance, Number 1 Salon, Irwins, Floral Expressions Keady

Ulster League Group A

Dungannon Thomas Clarke’s vs High Moss Sarsfields GFC

Final score Thomas Clarke’s 2-9 Sarsfields 3-8

Today saw Sarsfields’ fourth Ulster League fixture against Dungannon side Thomas Clarke’s on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon with Thomas Clarke’s playing with the wind advantage in the first half. The home side surely made the most of the wind, scoring 1-2 without reply including an early goal by Kiefer Morgan and a point from Patrick Quinn. Michael Stevenson started strong for the Hoops side scoring an impressive goal and with help from Johnny Reynolds and Colin Stevenson, the visitors lead into the closing of the first half Thomas Clarke’s 1-3 Sarsfields 2-2.

With the wind and rain falling strong in the second half, Sarsfields managed a strong opening performance with points from Colin Stevenson, Johnny Reynolds and Paul McGeown, the Derrytrasna side managed a 7 point lead. It was then when Thomas Clarke’s dominated much of the second half with a goal and points from Patrick Quinn and Lorcan Mallon. Dungannon managed to come within two points of Sarsfields before the Stevenson brothers and Paul McGaughey widened the gap although with two late points from Patrick Quinn and Gary Mallon.

The match ended in an exciting style with Thomas Clarke’s pipped to the post by Sarsfields with final score Thomas Clarke’s 2-9 Sarsfields 3-8. Sarsfields’ next Ulster league match is Sunday 8th March against Glenties (Donegal) in Tyrone GAA Garvaghy Centre at 12pm. Sarsfields will then play Ardboe (Tyrone) in Ardboe on Wednesday 11th March at 8pm.
