Man in his 20s dies following early morning collision in Castleblayney

Gardaí have said the road remains closed at this time, with a technical examination of the scene by Forensic Collision Investigators due to take place

A man in his 20s has died following a two-vehicle collision in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan this morning.

The incident, which involved a car and a van, occurred at around 6:15 this morning (Thursday) in the Moneygorbet area.

The male driver of the car, aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male passenger, also in his 20s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was taken to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The body of the deceased has since been taken to the mortuary in the hospital where a post-mortem will take place.

Gardaí have said the road remains closed at this time, with a technical examination of the scene by Forensic Collision Investigators due to take place.

Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are also appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castleblayney Garda Station on 01 666 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
