Irish President Michael D Higgins to address Armagh’s John Hewitt Summer School

Irish President Michael D Higgins will be in Armagh on Monday, July 28, for an opening address to the John Hewitt International Summer School.

The Presidential talk will get underway at 11.15am at the Market Place Theatre, and will mark the start of the annual five-day celebration of the arts.

President Higgins will be introduced by Lord Rana, after Lord Mayor of Armagh Cathy Rafferty gives an official welcome and address at 10.45am.

The John Hewitt Society’s festival of culture and creativity at The John Hewitt International Summer School is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Armagh City and District Council, the Community Relations Council, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Andras House.

Now in its 27th year, the programme features readings, talks, discussions and debates, as well as celebrating visual art, music and theatre.

A passionate political voice, a poet and writer, academic and statesman, promoter of inclusive citizenship and champion of creativity within Irish society, President Michael D Higgins has previously served at almost every level of public life in Ireland, including as Ireland’s first Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.

The John Hewitt Society is delighted to welcome President Higgins to Armagh to deliver the opening address at this year’s Summer School.
