Tandragee through to Irish Cup third round

Tandragee Rovers 3 Newtowne 1

Irish Cup Round 2

Tandragee Rovers progressed into Round 3 of the Irish Cup with a hard fought 3-1 win against Limavady side Newtowne.

The visitors, unbeaten this season, impressed from the start with their slick passing and movement off the ball but it was Rovers that opened the scoring when Paul Greenaway intercepted a loose pass to fire the home side into the lead.

Newtowne almost drew level from a set piece but the centre half couldn’t hit the target.

Tandragee increased their lead from a set piece of their own. Cecil Corbett beat the keeper to the ball in the air from Colin Bingham’s free kick and Paul Greenaway was on hand to knock the ball into the net.

Newtowne pulled a goal back early after the restart and had Tandragee under pressure for much of the half as their went in search of an equaliser.

But their failure to convert their pressure into goal scoring chances was punished by Tandragee when Greenaway completed his hatrick with 15 minutes to go. Newtowne never gave up and they went close with a header from a corner and then Rovers keeper had to pull off a double save from close range.

Tandragee’s defended strongly throughout but man of the match was hattrick hero Paul Greenaway.

Tandragee Rovers Reserves beat Oxford Sunnyside 5-1 away from home in the league. Willie Duke, Paul McWilliams (2) and Dean Singleton (2) got the goals.
