Woman’s warning after disgusting discovery in Lidl rice packet

A Banbridge woman was left shocked after discovering living beetles inside bags of rice purchased from the Lidl store in the town.

Lyn Burns said her stomach was turned as she watched the weevils – a type of beetle which attacks stored grain – crawl around inside the Golden Sun packaging.

She posted pictures on the ‘Banbridge Saints and Sinners’ Facebook page to highlight an issue that may well not be an isolated problem.

“This has really turned me ???? called over to mums today and she was making one of my dad’s favs…pudding rice…well until we found these wee blighters in not only one packet but two,” she posted.

She added: “It wasn’t just a few it was a total infestation ???? Product well in date.”

Speaking to Armagh I, Lyn said she received a refund from the Lidl store in Banbridge.

“I went down to local store and spoke with manager,” she said. “I have left it with them and he said they’d be in touch with me mid-week.

“I got a refund for all the price of it but I was more concerned about them getting the rest of the product off the shelves.”

A spokeswoman for Lidl told Armagh I: “[We’ve] spoken to both our Customer Services team and Quality team and neither have a record of this complaint, or any similar in the area, therefore we would believe this to be an isolated incident.”

Weevils can lay up to 300 eggs during her lifetime but these eggs can be killed by extreme temperatures, either by freezing or boiling.

They are not considered harmful to humans.
