Tenders received for major extension to Co Armagh primary school

Tenders have been received for the building of a major extension at a County Armagh primary school.

The development has been earmarked at Hart Memorial, at Charles Street in Portadown.

The school opened in 1935 and also has a sizeable nursery department on site.

The plan is to build a new single-storey extension to the premises.

It will add an additional three classrooms, together with a resource base, cloakrooms, toilets and storage space, as well as a plant room.

All of this would be accommodated within an existing courtyard.

The cost of the work is understood to be in excess of £250,000.

Plans for the development had been submitted to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council by the Education Authority.

Planning approval was actually given in July past and this week tenders have been received for the work to be carried out.

But a contractor will not be appointed until the funding becomes available.

It is hoped that an announcement will be forthcoming from the Department of Education.
