Firefighters tackle blaze at former St Michael’s High School

Firefighters were tasked with tackling a blaze at the former St Michael’s Senior High School in Lurgan this evening (Saturday).

The cause of the fire on the Cornakinnegar Road remained unknown tonight but motorists have been advised to avoid the area as emergency services deal with the incident.

Upper Bann SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly suggested the fire, which started around 8.30pm, was a deliberate act.

Posting on Twitter, she said: “Disgraceful, wanton vandalism at the site of the former St. Michael’s Senior High School.”

However, the extent of the damage is also unknown at this stage – police are expected to open up an investigation when the fire service hand over the scene.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
