Looming GP crisis in Crossmaglen is ‘disturbing’

South Armagh MLA Megan Fearon has spoken with Health Board officials about the GP crisis in Crossmaglen.

It’s the latest in a series of meetings the Sinn Féin representative has held with various groups over the past year since Dr. Fee announced his intention to resign.

“I have met with numerous bodies over the past year, including the Health Board and the British Medical Association, to try and find a solution to both this particular issue in Crossmaglen and the general looming GP crisis,” she said.

“This week I spoke with the Head of Integrated Care in the Health and Social Care Board who has assured me that the contract is being advertised far and wide and that they hope to have more news for us by the end of May when that process ends.

“I will most certainly be following up on this but in the meantime I will be raising Dr. Fee’s very serious concerns with the Board again to see what can be done to alleviate them.

“Disturbingly, what we are seeing in Crossmaglen is a foreshadowing of what could soon be a major national crisis as GP numbers continue to drop.

“Successive Health Ministers have utterly failed to address the issue and it is now coming to a head, particularly in rural areas.

“I will be working with my colleagues in both the Assembly and the Dáil to ensure that rural communities get the protection they need.”
