Work has begun to replace the missing cill as part of the ongoing restoration plans at Moneypenny’s Lock, Portadown.
Walkers and cyclists are advised to take care when passing the very popular Lock House.
It sits on the tow path between Portadown and Scarva and the 18th Century Lock cill is the current focus of attention.
Access will not be affected at weekends, but there will be heavy machinery and vehicles on the tow path – Monday to Friday – over the next few weeks.
This may even require the closure of the tow path for short periods of time.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of both the Lock House and Lock.
The council is ensuring that the stonework on the 18th Century cill is stabilised and protected for future generations.
The work will also assist upstream navigation for canoeists.
