Man caught with no seat belt claimed ‘bad back’ but had no exemption certificate

Penalty points and fine for not wearing a seat belt

A Portadown man who told police a bad back was the reason he was not wearing a seatbelt has been handed three penalty points.

John Andrew Ross, of College Manor, pleaded guilty to failing to wear a seat belt at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Court heard police spotted the 48-year-old driving a Volkswagen Golf on the Killycomain Road, Portadown, at around 6.30pm on July 3 whilst unrestrained.

The defendant was pulled over and spoken to by the officers.

Ross claimed that he had a “bad back” which was the reason he was not wearing a seatbelt, but he was unable to produce an exemption document.

The defendant was handed three penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £150, along with the offender’s levy, within four weeks.
