Bogus charity street collector sentenced after Armagh scam

A man who travelled from Galway to Armagh in order to carry out a bogus charity collection has been given a suspended sentence.

Charles Brendan Ward, 34, admitted to carrying out the false collection under the guise of a Marie Curie collector on December 14.

A member of the public had spotted the man acting suspiciously before notifying police.

When spoke to by police, Ward was found to have already collected £100 in a plastic tub with the charity logo stuck onto them.

Ward was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months.

The defendant said he had no desire to return to the jurisdiction.
